1. Think it through

Write down your why and how. What does it mean to live as a creature, not a machine? Where do you draw the line?

2. Steady does it

This is where the snail-slime meets the road. What will and won't you do, in order to embrace your humanity? How will you cheerfully refuse to live like a machine?

3. Stagger onward rejoicing

Tell a friend to tell a friend, plant the proverbial flag, fight the good fight to stay human in an inhumane era.

Is this a petition or a set of rules or a cult or something?

Nah, it’s just a priority, a principle, a protest chant, a battle cry. You decide how to live it. Write your own manifesto, or borrow Wendell Berry’s.

Is this against AI?

Yes and no. It’s against AI replacing the uniquely human, and it's against us humans being reshaped according to the patterns and values of generative AI, which seems to happen anytime we use a technology heavily. Like Bartleby the scrivener, you’re free to say with regards to AI, “I would prefer not to.” But neither is this a strictly abstentious gesture. I myself (the fella who made this site) use AI in some specific ways. I am one of, in Paul Kingsnorth’s terms, the “cooked ascetics.”

Was this made with AI?

No, that would be grossly incongruous. This site was hand-built by me, Vic King, and I hired other humans for the lettering and the doodles. All the words were written and edited by myself alone. Correction: my wife did give me a good suggestion upon reading the first draft.

Is this against robots?

Not completely, but it is against robots replacing activities that ought to be uniquely human (for example, the care of our elders and the education of our children). And just as importantly, it’s a caution against humans behaving more and more robotically. Work without rest, words without heart, and food as mere fuel rather than feast are warning signs of machine-like living.
